Obesity & Complication

Being obese can lead to serious health problems, as well as shorten your life expectancy.

Health problems

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of health problems, including:

  • high blood pressure (hypertension) – this is a major risk factor for developing a serious cardiovascular disease (conditions that can affect the circulation of blood around the body)
  • infertility
  • type 2 diabetes
  • many types of cancer
  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • asthma
  • osteoarthritis – a condition that affects the joints
  • back pain
  • depression
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
  • sleep apnoea – a condition that causes interrupted breathing during sleep
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux disease

If you are obese, you are also more likely to develop complications in pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia (which is when a woman experiences a potentially dangerous rise in blood pressure during pregnancy).
